(Charleston, IL) – Eastern Illinois University has been recognized for its leadership in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and Fair Elections Center’s Campus Vote Project’s Voter Friendly Campus program. EIU is one of only 262 colleges and universities recognized by NASPA with strong commitments to nonpartisan democratic engagement.
In the recognition materials, EIU was acknowledged for being a higher education institution “dedicated to building a strong, collaborative civic and democratic engagement program on campus” through robust leadership commitments that support student voter registration and education initiatives.
“We are grateful for the leadership and expertise of your campus in our program,” said the award materials sent to EIU leaders announcing EIU’s designation.
“EIU is wholly committed to providing our students with the knowledge and expertise they need to become active, engaged citizens,” said EIU Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Anne Flaherty. “Participating in America’s democracy through voting is a critical component of that responsibility. On behalf of all students and employees at EIU, I want to acknowledge and applaud Crystal Brown in our Office of Leadership & Engagement for overseeing this important initiative.”
The Higher Education Act of 1965 requires most higher education institutions to distribute voter registration forms to their students. However, the Fair Elections Center’s Campus Vote Project recognizes EIU as an organization “dedicated to moving beyond compliance and striving for excellence.” By committing time and resources to invest in the Voter Friendly Campus designation process, EIU is helping students become engaged and active citizens—which is a critical part of the EIU mission.
