(Charleston, IL) -- Eastern Illinois University's student-run newspaper, The Daily Eastern News, was named the Best College Media Group of the Year by the College Media Association at the national college media conference in Atlanta last week for its excellent coverage across print, digital and social media.
The student newspaper also took first for Best Student Newspaper Website among college media programs across the country while the newspaper website was also a finalist for an Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker award.
The DEN captured more than 15 national award for its in-depth coverage across print, online and social media platforms.
Madelyn Kidd and Cam’ron Hardy took first in the best breaking new story category, while Ashanti Thomas earned the top spot in Best Sports News Photo.
Additionally, the staff took second for best news package, best multimedia breaking news, and best breaking news coverage.
Rob Le Cates, the DEN’s current editor-in-chief, took home three photo awards – second for best news feature, third for best sport feature and honorable mention for best portrait.
Thomas, meanwhile, earned another honor during the two-day on-site photo competition in Atlanta. Her image was selected class favorite by her peers. The final results of that competition will be announced next week.
