Angela Anthony, Ph.D., Associate Professor

Dr. Angela Anthony has been a dedicated member of the Eastern Illinois University faculty since 2006 and began serving as the Department Honor’s Coordinator in 2009. She has served on the University Honor’s Council for 9 years with several terms as chair and has been recognized with the Distinguished Honor’s Faculty Award. Dr. Anthony has directed or co-directed more than 25 undergraduate honor’s theses. She mentors all CDS honor’s students every year by helping them choose research topics, encouraging them to submit presentations, helping them apply for graduate programs and scholarships, and nominating them for awards.

2023 — 2024 Edwin L. “Bud” May Award

1978-2003), the Graduate School, in collaboration with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, established the Edwin L. “Bud” May Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research and Grants. The award is given each year to a member of the university community who has demonstrated extraordinary success in securing external support for research, public service, or creative activity.


The administrative team of Communication Disorders and Sciences’ Autism Center (Jill Fahy, Trina Becker, Felicia Magee and Rebecca Throneburg) is being recognized with the 2024-2025 Edwin L. “Bud” May Award for the grant funding secured through the Autism Program (TAP) of Illinois and the increased services to EIU and the community that funding facilitates. The Autism Center at EIU began providing speech-language Autismdiagnostic services in the EIU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic in 2013 and began providing support services to EIU students with Autism with the development of the STEP program in 2015. Annual long-term grant funding of $220,000 to $250,000 from TAP was secured beginning in the summer of 2022. This funding has allowed Jill Fahy, Director of STEP, to have additional professional staff and student workers providing support services without increasing fees. Funds have also supported the expansion of services in executive functioning, social communication, and recreation and leisure programming.

 

Other EIU students gain valuable experience and training as undergraduate peer mentors in the STEP program. STEP is consistently ranked in the top 15 college autism support programs in the nation. Grant funds have also allowed Trina Becker, Director of the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, and the autism diagnostic team to offer screenings and multi-disciplinary evaluations to individuals with Autism from the community at a very low cost. Clients who are evaluated by this multi-disciplinary Autism Center team, with the support of TAP funding, now receive speech-language, neuropsychological, behavioral, occupational therapy, and special education assessment and recommendations. EIU graduate students participate in the evaluation process and gain multi-disciplinary experience, and undergraduate students frequently shadow various professionals on the team, gaining observation experience and insights into the professions and Autism.

 

Felicia Magee, Business Administrator in Communication Disorders and Sciences, gathers all the information from everyone associated with EIU’s TAP grant for required monthly and quarterly reporting. She takes leadership in coordinating with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs as well as Accounting on campus. She ensures all on-going requirements for grant reporting and audits are met. Rebecca Throneburg, Department Chair, coordinates planning each year, monitors progress on deliverables and spending and assists with problem-solving. They are grateful to be able to provide the additional support and learning experiences to EIU students and the valuable community service with the on-going TAP grant funds.
