August 5 - 9, 2024
The FDIC August Institute is the premier professional development series aimed at preparing Eastern Illinois University faculty and staff for the coming academic year. This year's institute will feature online workshops on AI, open educational resources, scholarly communications, and tours of classroom technology across campus. The week kicks off with the Welcome Back Social on Monday August 5 at 1p, and end with a lunch-and-learn on teaching and learning with AI. Goodbye SelectedWorks, hello Scholars@EIU! Join Todd Bruns, Head of Scholarly Communications for Booth Library, and learn about exciting changes to scholarly communications at Booth.
With the dissolution of the Digital Commons SelectedWorks platform, we have the opportunity to transition to a more robust Research Management System relational database. This new platform creates an EIU “Research Portal” that highlights institutional research metrics and, most importantly, includes Faculty Profiles.
Whether you had an existing SelectedWorks profile that’s been migrated, or you didn’t yet have a SelectedWorks page, this workshop will bring you up to speed on managing your Faculty Profile in the Research Portal. You’ll also learn about the other features and functions of PURE4EGS and how this Research Management System can profile your research, highlight the student work you supervise, and create new opportunities for collaborating across disciplines and institutions.

Talking with Your Students about Information Literacy

This interactive webinar, presented by Booth RES Faculty, empowers college teaching faculty to effectively discuss information literacy with their students. Recognizing the information landscape students navigate, the workshop delves into strategies for fostering critical thinking and research skills. Participants will explore core information literacy concepts, including source evaluation, search techniques, and citation practices. Faculty will gain practical tools to seamlessly integrate information literacy discussions into their curriculum, regardless of discipline. Additionally, the workshop will bridge the gap between classroom instruction and library resources by equipping faculty to direct students to appropriate library services and research tools. By the workshop's conclusion, participants will feel confident initiating conversations about information literacy, empowering students to become discerning information consumers and successful researchers.

Student success is at the forefront of what each of us does on this campus. From classrooms, to advising sessions, the counseling clinic, and residence halls, students are our mission. However, there are few opportunities for faculty and student success professionals on campus to engage with each other.
This webinar, and engaged reading group, will provide that space for vital areas on campus to come together, engage, and learning side-by-side from each other in order to create a campus-wide culture of student success.
This webinar is based on the book "Creating a Campus-Wide Culture of Student Success" and will offer an opportunity to participate in a campus-wide reading group during the Fall 2024 semester.

Inclusive Pedagogy in Action

Building on Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards (CRTLS) for the State of Illinois Board of Education, this presentation will briefly review these standards before delving into specific strategies for implementing inclusive pedagogy practices in college classrooms. Dr. Jones and Dr. Davis will introduce the concept of a culturally responsive "audit," encouraging instructors to examine their teaching materials for inclusivity and diversity. They will discuss methods for incorporating student voices and reflections into the learning process. The presentation aims to move educators from awareness to action, providing tools for analyzing and revising curricula to align with diversity, inclusion, and equity-mindedness.

Classroom Technology - A Hands-On Tour
Facilitators: FDIC Instructional Support and Training Specialist
Location: Instructional Technology Center (ITC) 1430 Buzzard
The lecterns in each classroom on campus contain foundational instructional technologies. This workshop will explain and demonstrate how to utilize this equipment to further your pedagogy. Key functionality to be demonstrated includes computer, projector, document camera, and sound equipment utilization. How to troubleshoot minor problems and seek help for malfunctioning lectern equipment will also be discussed. Learners will also have the opportunity to interact with the equipment for themselves at the end of the session and ask questions.
Join the FDIC’s Instructional Support and Training Specialists for this up-close demonstration of the classroom technology across campus. Participants will meet at the Instructional Technology Center (1430 Buzard Hall) and join their college-specific ISTS for a tour of classrooms in their teaching areas and colleges.
There will be some walking to campus buildings, so please wear comfortable shoes!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we learn, work, and think, impacting creativity, authorship, and education. This lecture will explore emerging ideas on the changes AI is bringing to education and the workplace, gaining invaluable insights into its potential.
Educators will learn how to effectively integrate new AI tools and resources, building confidence to navigate the challenges and seize opportunities. The workshop covers interactive learning techniques, advanced assignment strategies, and methods to maintain academic integrity in the age of AI.
As AI reshapes work and human thought, critical thinking, information literacy, and a liberal arts education become increasingly vital. This lecture equips educators with the skills to prepare students for a rapidly evolving world, guiding them through the future of AI-powered teaching and learning.
