A chemistry background serves as a foundation for many careers in seemingly "nontechnical" areas, areas in which a technical background would give you a great advantage. For example, sales and management positions in the pharmaceutical industry or administrative positions in government laboratories would be attractive to individuals with both chemical and business training.
Please help us welcome Dr. Cesar Ortiz-Ledon to our Department, as a new tenure-track analytical chemist. Dr. Ortiz-Ledon earned his BS in Chemistry from Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez and his PhD from University of Texas-Austin after starting at New Mexico State University. Most recently he was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Wisconsin. He will be teaching our analytical courses as well as general chemistry/general education chemistry, and his research will focus on studying electrochemical interfaces at the nanoscale level by coupling electrochemistry with other analytical techniques.
Dr. Michael Beck (Chemistry/BioChemistry) just secured a major NIH R15 grant for $300,000 to study human drug metabolizing enzymes called carboxylesterases. This grant also provides funds for new equipment and paid research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Congratulations, Dr. Beck!.
Students in this program take courses in biology in addition to advanced work in biochemistry. Dr. Periyannan's research focuses on all aspects of hydrolytic enzymes, especially Zn-metalloproteases and glycoside hydrolases in order to understand their physiological function, in disease development and molecular evolution of bacterial life in oligotrophic environments.
Dr. Yan's research is concerned with the preparation of host molecules with a cavity and their ability of encapsulation and release of smaller guests could be controlled by an external input toward design of controllable chemical delivery agents, devices and sensors.
