The Eastern Illinois University Chemistry and Biochemistry Department hosted the annual Maurice Shepherd Chemistry Contest on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. This year marked the 44th consecutive year for the contest which drew 52 participants from 8 regional high schools -- Altamont, Charleston, Cumberland, Fisher, Lawrenceville, Mahomet-Seymour, and Mt. Zion.
Dr. Rebecca Peebles, EIU Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, was the guest speaker at the post-test program, and she presented a relevant and interesting talk to our guests entitled Chemistry of the Universe.
Newcomer Mt. Zion won the travelling team trophy with a team average of 33.3. Defending champion Mahomet-Seymour placed second with a team average of 30.0. Altamont placed third and Morrisonville placed fourth with team averages of 29.2 and 28.5 respectively. Each team received a plaque in recognition of their accomplishment.
A student from Altamont won the individual competition. Two students, one from Mahomet-Seymour and one from Mt. Zion tied for second place. A student from Mahomet-Seymour placed third and a student from Mt. Zion placed fourth. Students from Mahomet-Seymour also placed fifth and sixth. The high score was 42.25 followed by scores of 41.25, 40, 38.55, 36.25, and 34.25. These students were awarded plaques in recognition of their performance.
Congratulations to the top teams and top students, and our thanks to all who participated. We are especially grateful to each teacher (coach), since the success of the contest very much depends on their willingness to enter and bring students to the contest.
The 45th annual Shepherd Contest is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2020. We look forward to your participation!
